Unlike many, I was actually extremely excited about "The Amazing Spider-Man" mainly because the movie's biggest weapon lies within the casting of Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spiderman and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy. These casting alone stands way above Tobey Maguire and Kristen Dunst pairing. Don't get me wrong, I do think the Sam Raimi's version of the Spider-Man series (the first two) were serviceable. They were pretty fun flicks to watch and I did like the stiffness that Tobey brings to Peter Parker. Sadly, those mannerisms just couldn't last for the entire trilogy. So I was really excited about this reboot, even with all the complaints that it's being rebooted way too early.
One of my fav. scenes of the movie. |
I had my expectations. Marc Webb just directed probably one of my favorite films in recent years, "(500) Days of Summer" and both Garfield and Stone had just walked out of two of their career best performances receiving critical praises in "The Social Network" and "Easy A" respectively. So any misstep will devastate me. And I'm pleasantly surprised by how smooth sailing this movie was.
After watching this film, I realized my problem with the original Spider-Man movie was in the plot as I faced the same problem here. There were way too many emotional arcs in the film. This drags the film to plot points after plot points just to get to the character arc that Spider-Man needed to be: be the hero and saves the day. I remembered demeriting the first film due to this, but the first film was too self-righteous and serious for its own good. However, this film breezes through with humor and wit and that's where a director like Marc Webb is useful in. With that, this film was a tremendous step up.
Emma Stone. Perfect in my eyes. <3 |
I know I have mentioned about the perfect casting of the pairing but did I mention how much Garfield brought to Peter Parker/Spiderman emotionally and physically. Garfield is an amazingly gifted actor. He is charming and always fun to watch on screen. He knows how to play the charm card. His wit and his awkwardness was endearing. I think he brought so much into Peter Parker that somehow I worry his alter-ego that was Spider-Man will be pushed aside. How wrong I was. The way he behaves and the way he moves (in that almost spide-y like way he crawls, he hangs, he turns his head), he was perfect. This film was as much about Spider-Man as Peter Parker. And did I mention how much I love Emma Stone. I've loved her since "The House Bunny" and still loving her.
This was the "promise" that supposedly set this reboot apart from the original, only it didn't. |
I know I've complained that there were way too many plot points and character arcs and to go into a full detail of his parents' past wouldn't be such a good idea, which I completely aware would probably be a set up for a sequel. However I just sort of wished they didn't do what we already know of and go straight into that because I hate it when an entire movie was just a set-up because it takes the movie-going experience and integrity away a little. I like to see a movie as a stand alone experience. However, it would be silly of me to even complain about it because the film in itself was a delight to watch.
One of my favorite single frame shots in the film. |
With that, I would watch this a second or even third viewing in a heartbeat for Garfield and Stone. And I can't wait for more. Although I wanted more of a "Batman Begins" reboot but instead I got a sort of "Iron Man" tone, I still digging it.
Rating: B+ for the movie (A+ for casting)
